Abstract

The history of Malaysian animated film industry can be traced back in the past 40 years. The production of animation is still on-going until today, but the reception is not stable as compared to local films of other genres or international animated films. This paper discusses the level of acceptance on Malaysian animated films among adults and the possible ways to improve them. An online survey questionnaire will be used to study the level of acceptance among Malaysians within 25 to 34 years old whereas in-depth interviews will be used to generate suggestions about the ways to improve local animated films. As a result, it is reported that local adults have a low level of acceptance towards local animated films, showing low confidence towards local production works. The factors that lead to the low level of acceptance were identified. Meanwhile, from the perspective of the experts, the main solution for the local animation industry to keep up with the international standards is to get a larger amount of funds. The current status of animation studios and animators in Malaysia shows that the lack of financial support affected the industry in a few major ways including manpower and marketing. Thus, several suggestions were stated by the researcher to different related parties as a catalyst to the growth of the industry.
