Abstract

Due to digitalization, newspapers today have print and online versions but there may be differences in the consumption patterns of print and online newspapers. This study examines the general consumption patterns, reasons for consumption patterns, and the preference for print and online newspapers including gender among young Malaysians aged from 18 to 30 years old. A quantitative research method was used in this study to examine the consumption patterns of young Malaysians. This study shows that young Malaysians consumed more online newspapers compared to print newspapers as online news is fast updated and timely. The theory used in this study is the Uses and Gratification Theory. Young Malaysians consumed news for cognitive needs, social interaction to have topics to talk with family and friends. From the gender perspective, young male Malaysians are more likely to use news topics to talk with family and friends through reading online newspapers compared to female young Malaysians.
