Abstract

The aim of this thesis is to study the reasons of senior citizens and young adults for choosing either traditional TV or online streaming services. The reason for choosing this research title is because it is now common knowledge that traditional television is losing audiences. Although various scholars have come out with their own research and statements specializing in discussing the reason behind the phenomenon, most of the research available are looking at the issue from the broadcast platforms’ point of view. That being said, this research will be looking into the viewership of traditional television and online streaming services from the point of view of 2 age groups that make up the majority of broadcast platforms’ audiences. This research asks the reason behind the target audiences’ reason for their preferred broadcast platform and the reason would then be analysed and compared to find out the similarities and differences, using focus group methodology. The significance of this research is that it is going to benefit the TV industry to take as a reference of why the industry is going downhill, by providing them the viewpoints from two groups of the most frequent TV users. It may also serve as a reference for traditional TV to improve themselves in order to be more competitive with online streaming platforms.
