Abstract

The history of misrepresentation of Asians in Hollywood films can be traced back to the golden age of Hollywood. Even as time progresses, misrepresentation and stereotypes towards Asian people in Hollywood films are still occurring. This research discusses the effects of misrepresentation of Asians towards Asian audiences and factors of stereotyping of Asians in certain characters in Hollywood films. Qualitative research is adopted for this study, in-depth interviews with 1 experienced Malaysian filmmaker and 1 Malaysian film critic will be conducted to gather information about the effects and factors on this issue. As a result, it is reported that the effects of misrepresentation of Asians are self-inflicted harms because of different perceptions and the factors of stereotyping of Asians in Hollywood films are due to lack of cultural understanding, character development and self categorization. From the perspective of both experts, the main solution to curb these issues is to study respective cultures and understand them before presenting a story and hire staff that is closely related or a part of that culture to help with the accuracy of the portrayal. Thus, several suggestions were also stated by the researcher to help curb this issue as well. 8
