Abstract

This project proposes an Enhanced Automatic Unified Power Factor Control System. This project is inspired by on the previous proposed work done by senior, Edwin Tan Boon Huang. This project is an advance version of the previous work done by him. In this project, a Static Synchronous Compensator (STATCOM) is designed and used for improving power factor at the load side instead of using capacitor bank which is used previously. This is due to there are power quality problems associated with the usage of capacitor bank for power factor correction purpose especially the presence of harmonic. This project aims to develop a voltage source based STATCOM to improve the power factor of the load locally and provide harmonic mitigation as well. A three-phase voltage source inverter with a DC bus capacitor is employed as a STATCOM that keeps injecting reactive power into the lines for power factor correction and harmonic mitigation purposes. The STATCOM is connected in shunt with the lines at the load side and it will acts as a current source that injects compensation and reactive current in order to mitigate harmonic current distortions and improve power factor. A Simulink model is successfully developed with the capability to provide power factor improvement and harmonic mitigation. From the results obtained, the Simulink model can improve the power factor until it is approached to unity and provide harmonic mitigation so that TDD is reduced below than 5% (IEEE 519 standard). A prototype is developed with the same capability as well. It can improve power factor approaches unity and reduce TDD below than 5% but the design of prototype is unsatisfied.
