Abstract

Acnes affect humans, particularly young and females in physical and psychological ways. Skin care products in the market are unable to solve acne-related problems for all people, and some might cause inflammatory actions. Oral drugs are used primarily but they can cause a rise in bacterial resistance to antibiotics. To solve these limitations, it is necessary to develop safe and cost-effective products. Exploration of plant sources that are traditionally used in acnes treatment may provide valuable results. Musa acuminata colla cv. lady finger has aromatic compounds that able to inhibit the growth of bacteria inflammation. In the past, numerous banana species have been studied to have these properties. Musa acuminata colla cv. lady finger peel and pulp also have these properties but have not been studied extensively towards acne-causing antibioticresistance bacteria and inflammation. Hence, this project aims to determine the antibacterial activity of Musa acuminata colla cv. lady finger ethanolic peel and pulp extracts on antibiotic-resistance bacteria that contribute to acne, Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli, using the Kirby-Bauer disc diffusion method. The 10,000 ppm peel extract showed a maximum inhibition zones of 13.3 mm and 12 mm on S. aureus and E. coli, respectively. Whereas, the 10,000 ppm pulp extract showed a maximum inhibition zones of 14.3 mm and 13 mm on S. aureus and E. coli, respectively. Besides, this research also aims to investigate the anti-inflammatory characteristic of Musa acuminata colla cv. lady finger ethanolic peel extract and pulp extracts by running albumin denaturation inhibitory assay and proteinase action inhibitory assay. In antialbumin denaturation assay, peel and pulp extracts exhibited 3.13% to 79.21% inhibition percentage at various concentrations. In the proteinase action inhibitory assay, peel and pulp extracts exhibited 6.82% to 82.18% inhibition percentage at various concentrations. Results were tabulated using one-way ANOVA with a confidence interval of 95%. From results of this research, it is suggested that the Musa acuminata colla cv. lady finger peel and pulp extracts have anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory properties and have the potential to be used in acne treatment
