Abstract

The present review evaluated the influence of the sociodemographic characteristics and exercise behavior towards the quality of life (QoL) of post-mastectomy patients, with perceived social support as the mediator. Four electronic databases were searched for appropriate observational and experimental studies. Sociodemographic variables (age, marital status, ethnicity, educational level, and employment status), surgery type, outcome of the perceived social support, exercise behavior, and QoL were extracted from each study for the purpose of a systematic review based on the PRISMA guidelines. 22 studies were identified, with a total of 4275 post-mastectomy patients globally. 9 studies looked into the perceived social support, 5 studies looked into the exercise behavior, 19 articles looked into the QoL, and 6 articles looked into the effect of perceived social support on exercise behavior and QoL. The results suggest that positive employment status with high levels of social support showed better exercise behavior and QoL among post-mastectomy patients. Conversely, further studies on the influence of the age, marital status, ethnicity, and educational level towards the QoL is warranted
