Abstract

The global trend of young adults avoiding marriage and romantic relationships is increasing. This study aimed to explore the relationship between attitudes toward singlehood, attachment styles (secure, anxious, avoidant), and life satisfaction among young adults in Klang Valley, Malaysia. Employing a cross-sectional design, data were gathered from 163 participants (78 males, 85 females) who completed the Revised Adult Attachment Scale (RAAS), Attitudes toward Singlehood Scale (AtSS), and Satisfaction With Life Scale (SWLS) via an online questionnaire. Results indicated no significant relationship between attachment styles and attitudes toward singlehood (χ2(4, N = 163) = 4.24, p = .38) or between attachment styles and life satisfaction (χ2(4, N = 163) = 1.62, p = .81). However, a significant positive and moderate correlation emerged between life satisfaction and attitudes toward singlehood (r(161) = .45; p < .01), suggesting a bidirectional effect. These findings enhance the understanding of factors influencing singlehood attitudes and life satisfaction among young adults, with implications for addressing the potential threat of an ageing society in Malaysia due to declining marriage rates and an increasingly elderly demographic. Future research should explore alternative variables and mediating factors impacting attitudes toward singlehood and their effect on societal dynamics
