Abstract
This study was done to examine the prevalence of coping strategies (problem-focused, emotion-focused, avoidance) and the relationship between optimism and coping strategies. Convenience sampling was used to gather a total of 128 (50 males, 78 females) university students as participants for this study. Respondents completed a questionnaire that used instruments such as Life Orientation Test - Revised (LOT-R) and Brief Coping Orientation to Problems Experienced (Brief COPE) to measure optimism and coping strategies respectively. Results showed that problem-focused coping is the preferred coping strategy among the respondents. This study also presented results that show optimism being positively related with problem-focused coping with a moderate strength. Additionally, this study also showed that optimism is negatively associated with avoiding coping. This relationship showed a weak strength. This study has given implications towards educators to establish a positive environment for the students when they study. This study also can help mental health practitioners in creating events or programmes directed to improve students motivation and well-being when dealing with stressful situations
