Abstract

This study explores the relationship between video gaming, sleep patterns, and physical activity levels among university students at Tunku Abdul Rahman University of Management and Technology (TAR UMT). With video gaming becoming increasingly popular, particularly among students, this research aims to examine how gaming habits influence crucial health aspects such as sleep quality and physical activity. A cross-sectional survey was conducted with 314 participants, who provided data on their gaming behaviors, sleep patterns, and physical activity levels through validated questionnaires. The results revealed a significant positive correlation between increased gaming hours and poor sleep quality (r = 0.199, p < .001), as well as a negative correlation between gaming frequency and physical activity levels (r = -0.128, p = .024). The findings indicate that prolonged video gaming is associated with disturbed sleep and a more sedentary lifestyle. These results highlight the importance of addressing the impact of video gaming on students' overall health and underscore the need for promoting balanced gaming habits, particularly in a university setting. Future research could benefit from including objective measures of physical activity and sleep to further understand the extent of these relationships.
