Abstract
Geometric angles is a fundamental branch of mathematics that improves students’ problem-solving and analytical skills. Traditional teaching methods fail to engage lower secondary students in learning geometric angles which leads to their difficulty in understanding the geometric angles concept. This study explores the impact of payoff structures in engaging a game-based learning approach on students’ learning outcomes in geometric angles. This research employs a quasi-experimental design that utilizes a Kahoot-based instructional game with a payoff matrix for evaluating the students’ learning outcomes in geometric angles according to accuracy, average response time and scores. Pre-test and post-test assessments are conducted to evaluate the students’ performance in geometric angles learning before and after participating in the game-based learning intervention using Kahoot. In addition, a survey is conducted to assess students’ satisfaction, engagement and motivation toward the game-based learning approach. The study utilizes multiple linear regression analysis, payoff matrix analysis, paired sample t-test and descriptive analysis to evaluate the effectiveness of the game-based learning intervention. Study results indicate the improvement in post-test scores thus confirming that game-based learning increases students’ performance in geometric angles learning. Moreover, students become more motivated and engaged in geometric angles learning when their learning takes place in interactive activities with competition elements (game) according to survey results. This study shows game-based learning intervention delivers effective enhancement of mathematics conceptual understanding together with improved academic performance and students’ motivation in geometric angles learning. The study provides empirical evidence which supports the effectiveness of game-based learning when payoff structures are integrated into mathematics education through gamification. Overall, the findings suggest that educators can utilize game-based learning intervention to enhance students’ learning outcomes in mathematics, especially geometric angles.
