Abstract

The purpose of the study was to analyse and compare the technical variables of goals scored between players below 30 and those 30 and above. The sample of the research consisted of 51 matches and 117 goals scored throughout the Euro 2024 tournament. It was found that the majority of goals were scored in the last 15 minutes of the match for both age groups (21.1% and 31.7% respectively). The type of play utilised most was open play (80.3% for <30; 78.0% for ≥30). Corners and penalties each accounted for 40.0% of set plays in the <30 group, and 33.3% each in the ≥30 group. The most common action leading to goals was a one touch finish, observed in 64.5% for the <30 group and 80.5% for the ≥30 group. Right-footed shots were the most frequent across both groups (56.6% for <30 and 48.8% for ≥30). It was seen that 80.3% (61) and 87.8% (36) of goals were scored inside the penalty box for groups <30 and ≥30 respectively. There were no statistically significant differences between both groups for most technical variables except for actions leading to goal (p = 0.041). The level of significance was set at p < 0.05.
