Abstract

This study examines the differences in tactical play and technical variables employed by elite women’s singles badminton player An Se Young across three major international competitions: the China Open 2023, the Indonesia Open 2024 (both Super 1000 series events), and the Paris Olympics 2024. A total of 13 match videos were analyzed, including five from each of the Super 1000 tournaments and three from the Olympic Games. Matches were selected from various stages, including early rounds, quarterfinals, semifinals, and finals, to ensure a comprehensive assessment. The findings revealed that the pushing shot was the most frequently used technical variable across all three competitions China Open (70.00 ± 7.106), Indonesia Open (107.40 ± 32.145), and Paris Olympics (106.67 ± 47.920) followed by clear, net shot, and drop shot. A barely significant difference was observed in the frequency of clear shots across the tournaments (p < .05), while no significant differences were found in the usage of other shot types (p > .05). Tactical play analysis showed that Zone 8 (21.15%), Zone 5 (21.07%), Zone 4 (14.79%), and Zone 10 (12.02%) were the most frequently targeted court areas, whereas Zones 3 (1.11%), 6 (0.91%), and 12 (0.88%) were least utilized. No significant differences in court zone usage were found across the three competitions (p > .05). The results offer insights into the technical and tactical tendencies of a top-ranked player and may inform coaching strategies and match preparation at the elite level.
