Abstract

The growing emphasis on sustainability in the construction industry has accelerated the adoption of Green Building Materials (GBMs) as a key driver of environmentally responsible development. Recognised for their potential to reduce carbon emissions, improve energy efficiency, and enhance occupant well-being, GBMs are gaining prominence worldwide. This study investigates the adoption of GBMs in the Malaysian construction industry by exploring their benefits, identifying barriers, and examining strategies for broader implementation. A quantitative research design was adopted using a structured questionnaire distributed to construction professionals across Malaysia, yielding 64 valid responses. The data were analysed using SPSS Version 27 through descriptive statistics, reliability analysis, and independent samples t-tests to assess gender-based differences in perceptions. The findings revealed strong agreement on the benefits of GBMs, particularly in sustainability, energy efficiency, and occupant health. However, challenges such as high initial costs, limited availability, and lack of skilled expertise remain significant. Strategies most strongly supported included awareness campaigns, government incentives, certification programmes, and investment in research and development. This study provides empirical evidence on GBM adoption in Malaysia, offering insights for industry practitioners, policymakers, and researchers in promoting sustainable construction practices
