Abstract

This project presents the design and implementation of an IoT-enabled automated rooftop system to protect outdoor caf spaces from unpredictable weather. The prototype features a hybrid mechanism with a lead screw linear actuator and a synchronized fabric roller, each driven by a NEMA 17 stepper motor. An ESP32 microcontroller processes data from a rain sensor for automatic closing and connects to the Blynk IoT platform, allowing for precise manual control via a smartphone. Testing successfully validated the prototype’s performance: the automatic rain detection was instantaneous and reliable, and the manual slider control was proven to be functionally accurate with a minor physical error of 1 cm. With a practical open/close cycle time of 28 seconds, this project delivers a successful proof-of-concept for an affordable and intelligent automated roof, offering a viable solution for small to medium-sized businesses
