Abstract
This study employs a language and power framework to conduct a discourse analysis of the film Joker (2019). While previous researchers have examined the psychological, physical appearance and behavioural factors contributing to the Joker’s successful transformation as a supervillain, the discourse analysis of how his language reflects his leadership and powerful image remains underexplored. Therefore, the objectives of this study include identifying linguistic differences in Joker, identifying linguistic strategies that showcase his leadership and analysing how Joker employs language to challenge the deep-rooted societal inequality in the film. This study employs a qualitative research method, analysing Joker’s discourse within the therapy scene, the backstage scene of the Murray Franklin Show and the scene of Murray Franklin Show. This study utilises Fairclough’s language and power framework, focusing specifically on the concepts of power behind discourse and power in discourse, to determine how discourse of the speaker reflects or challenges underlying societal inequality within the film. The findings posit that following his transformation, Joker’s linguistic style exhibits greater assertiveness and confidence. He deliberately ignores the dominant discourse of authorities, strategically employing pronouns, shared experiences and imperative tones to mobilise the working class against social injustice.
