Abstract

Rapid urban and rural development in Malaysia has increased the demand for sustainable and cost-effective street lighting. Conventional grid-based lights consume high electricity and require frequent maintenance, leading to high operating costs. This project aims to design and develop a low-cost automatic solar street light system with intensity control, targeting a budget of approximately RM100. The system integrates a photovoltaic panel, rechargeable battery, Arduino Nano microcontroller, light-dependent resistor (LDR) sensor, and high-efficiency LED. The panel charges the battery during the day, while the microcontroller adjusts LED brightness at night based on ambient light readings. Methodology includes component selection, system design, prototype construction, and evaluation using a decision matrix. Results demonstrate automatic day-night switching and gradual LED intensity adjustment, while maintaining costs within the budget. The project validates the feasibility of an affordable, energy-saving solar street light suitable for small-scale community applications, contributing to reduced grid dependency and renewable energy adoption in Malaysia
