Abstract

This dissertation outlines the essential of the sodium silicate affecting the properties of the cotton felt. The objective of this project is to improve the thermal insulate properties and fire retardant of cotton felt and to study moisture content of cotton felt. This project consists of 3 parts. First part is the introduction of various types of insulation materials. Second part is the description of various types of felt and its manufacturing process. Sodium silicate is the additive being used to enhance the thermal insulation properties of felt. The purpose of improving the thermal insulation properties is to obstruct the heat transferring through conduction, convection and radiation. Last part is the discussions and conclusions. Three experiments; flammability test, moisture test and thermal flow test have been carried out. The thermal insulation performance of felt after sodium silicate being added as additives will be discussed base on the results of thermal experiment mention above. The conclusion is being made based on the results that to achieve the objectives of this dissertation.
