Abstract
Lean manufacturing has become popular in small and medium industry in Malaysia. It is because lean manufacturing implementation is focused on getting the right things to the right place at the right time in the right quantity to achieve perfect work flow, while minimizing waste and being flexible and able to change. The purpose of this study is to provide a more thorough analysis of lean manufacturing implementation which may serve as guide to any company that plan to implement and enhance lean manufacturing. There are six critical success factors and perceived benefits are found in this study. The six critical success factors are organisation culture, multifunctional team, employee's involvement, integration of suppliers, management commitment and training, while perceived benefit include financial and industrial benefits. A short and easy-to-reply questionnaire was developed and sent the e-mail to a total of 200 SMI firms listed in the Directory of Small and Medium Industries Development Corporation (SMIDEC). Besides that, the author also visits the factory and collects the data from top management because online survey does not have enough respondents and it is possible to have face to face interview. The data collected was analysed by using a statistical software system called SPSS Version 16. Based on the responses from the industries, reliability analysis, mean and standard deviation, data analysis were carried out to identify the critical factors for the successful implementation of lean manufacturing and data validity respectively using SPSS. Based on 22 questionnaire surveys, it was concluded that multifunctional team is the only one critical success factor of lean manufacturing implementation.
