Abstract

This project is to modify some features of the blades to obtain high lift coefficient wind turbine blade design using ANSYS Fluent simulations and also to increase the efficiency for wind turbine blade. NACA 4415 aerofoil profile was set as the baseline model and modification such as different angle of attack and different chord length along the blade will be simulated and combined to get the optimum blade design. NACA 9412 and NACA 0021 will be compared with the NACA 4415 to study the flow around the aerofoil. Simulation results were obtained and several lift and drag coefficients were compared and justified to choose the best possible parameters. The project regarding wind turbine blade design in simulations was verified by mesh convergence study with a number of division element size of 250. Next, NACA 9412 turns out to be the best aerofoil profile for wind turbine blades in terms of lift coefficient which is 1.400866. The only drawback of NACA 9412 is there occurs flow separation and back flow at the trailing edge. Lastly, the simulations results were compared with BEM theory for validation and the percentage error of lift coefficient was between 9 – 14 %.
