Abstract

Chiller barrel is considered as a shell-and-tube heat exchanger and generally applied in a water-cooled chiller. There are two types of role that chiller barrel acting in a chiller which are condenser and evaporator. Chiller barrel are often applied in HVAC system and several product processing industry. It is important to improve the performance of a chiller barrel so that the usage of electrical energy can be reduce while the quality of a product can be increased. In this project, the performance of a chiller barrel will be simulated and designing of chiller barrel will be done based on the size of the baffle to improve the performance. Besides that, the flow characteristics of the fluid in the chiller barrel will be analysed and compared also by using a CFD simulation tool. By referring from several related research papers, total of 5 designs are modelled for comparison. The process in solving simulation consists of modelling and meshing the basic geometry of chiller barrel using Solidworks. Total of 7 tubes with 20mm outer diameter are consisted in the chiller barrel with the length of 600mm and 90mm shell inner diameter. In the end of the project, outlet temperature and pressure different will be simulated while rate of heat transfer, logarithmic mean temperature difference and overall heat transfer coefficient will be calculated. Then, all those values will be analysed and compared in order to select the most optimum design which is the baffle with 30% of cut percentage based on the consideration of overall heat transfer coefficient and pressure gradient.
