Abstract
The number of registered private vehicle in Malaysia has increased gradually. One of the consequences is the increased in car accidents rate. This happens due to unawareness of vehicle approaching. Current vehicle safety system is insufficient to notify drivers about the environment condition. Hence to improve current situation, Doppler Radar System is introduced. The Doppler Radar sensor is able to estimate both speed and distance of a vehicle approaching. Doppler Radar sensor will emit a continuous microwave frequency signal and received the feedback frequency through the antenna simultaneously. In this project, a 10.525Ghz X-band microwave sensor module, HB100 will be used. HB100 Radar system module will be connected to Arduino Mega in this project. The system will then analyze and compare the amplitude of the received frequency to calculate the distance and analyze the change in frequency to calculate speed of vehicle approaching within the Radar range. A simulation of distance and speed of an approaching vehicle will be done in Matlab by using the Radar system function. The existing Radar system in Matlab will be modified into HB100 module specification. During the simulation, the speed and distance of a vehicle will be input and the results from the simulation will be a frequency-time graph with estimated speed and distance by the modified Radar system. The experiment had divided into two parts. In the first experiment the prototype is place stationary. The results obtained from the experiment shows accuracy of 97.8% and 98.9% when vehicle and pedestrian approaches the prototype respectively. The simulated results show accuracy of 95.5% and 94.4% when vehicle and pedestrian approach the simulated Doppler Radar system. However, in the second experiment, the prototype is place on a moving vehicle which reduces the accuracy to 84.4% when a vehicle approaches the prototype-vehicle. While simulated result has an accuracy of 82.6%. From the results obtained in the experiments, the Doppler Radar System is able to detect the movement of target object. For the future, to improve the accuracy of Doppler Radar System a real-time monitoring and program editing is needed to reduce the environment noise frequency to be obtained by the sensor.
