Abstract

Compulsive buying behaviour is not something new to the society in Malaysia yet there are only a few number of people in Malaysia knows what compulsive buying behaviour really is. Compulsive buying behaviour can be defined as a chronic, repetitive purchasing that will be comes a primary response to the negative events of feeling to the individual. In addition everyone may be a victim of compulsive buying behaviour regarding their gender, age or social status. Due to this reason this study will investigating the factors contributing to compulsive buying behaviour among the students in tertiary education. A total of 266 questionnaire are being distributed to the tertiary students in the Setapak, Kuala Lumpur. Moreover, in order to achieve the research objective of this study there are five hypotheses that are being developed and the determinants include materialism, anxiety, depression which were found to have significant relationships with compulsive buying behaviour. This study finds that people who are suffering from negative trait, they will tend to develop compulsive buying behaviour. Besides, people that are materialistic will also tend to develop compulsive buying behaviour. This negative trait will also mediate the relationship between the materialism and compulsive buying behaviour. The implication from this study will help to understand on how individual will develop compulsive buying and so to use preventive ways to stop the practical relationship between compulsive buying and negative emotionality by minimizing the triggering rate or eliminate them.
