Abstract

The primary objective of this project is to compute the optimum rate of descent by manipulating the position of flaps (flaps angle) in various landing situations such as normal landing condition and emergency landing condition. This project is done by using Computer-Aided Software such as SOLIDWORKS and JavaFoil to generate the airfoil and flaps geometry to carry out simulation in ANSYS FLUENT. The methodology of ANSYS FLUENT using is the algorithms with reference to the concept and theory of Computational Dynamics Fluid (CFD) to create various computational models. The model has been chosen in ANSYS FLUENT to carry out this simulation is Sparlat-Allmaras model by using the modelled transport equation for turbulent (kinematic eddy) viscosity with strain-vorticity based which specialized in compute the aerodynamics characteristics of airfoil due to its robustness in calculating flow of wall-bounded. This is because the lift coefficient which is one of the variables that affect rate of descent is then being generated and transfer into MATLAB programming software to calculate the optimum rate of descent by a series of equations. It is shown that the plain flaps are having a higher lift coefficient and lower rate of descent compared to slotted flaps. The obtained results are then validated by comparing it to previous published research papers to get the percentage difference of two sets of data. Last but not least, the results are then being analysed with theories to apply into real-life application with justifications. The contribution of this project is mainly to improve the survivability of people when the airplane is experiencing whether accidents or emergency situations. On top of that, the fuel consumption of airplane also can be utilized at an optimum rate by optimizing the rate of descent to reduce the pollution in the world.
