Abstract

Crankshafts are power shafts of engines. It has a complicated shape that consists of crank webs and crankpins which are greater bearing surfaces whose axis is offset from that of the crank. Crankshaft transfers the loads from the connecting rods on the clutch. Failure of the crankshaft has happened after 1948 hours until 30,375 hours of operation. Many studies had done show that the crankpin web fillet is the region that is easy to crack. To minimize excessive stresses acting on the crankshaft, the current crankshaft wants to redesign and modify to increase engine service time. SolidWorks is used to analyse the location of high-stress concentration of crankshaft using finite element analysis and redesign the crankshaft to increase its fatigue lifetime. The result shows that all of the lengths of the web are changed from 15.01mm to 13.01mm is the most suitable modification as the maximum stress is the lowest, so it can increase the most fatigue lifetime.
