Abstract
Farmin is one of the components that is required for the production of rapid setting bitumen emulsion and is contained within a drum. This raw material is needed in the preparation of soap solution (water + hydrochloric acid + farmin + calcium chloride). Therefore, for every production of rapid setting bitumen emulsion, different amount of farmin is required. Since farmin is contained in a drum as solid, it is hard to break it into smaller pieces, which is essential for the preparation of soap solution. This is because large chunks may not dissolve fully in hot water and may cause clogging within the pipes. Thus, a design for farmin crusher was developed where serrated blades were used instead of sharp edged blades. After running several tests, farmin was able to be crushed to powder-like form. Despite the results, the time taken to crush 20 kg of farmin using the crusher is the same as the conventional method. This is probably due to the fact that the overall system is not stable and hence, the hydraulic motor needs to run a tad slower than normal. But, farmin crusher is still preferable since farmin is in powder form and it will be easier to dissolve, which leads to reduction of time preparation for soap solution. In a nutshell, by improving the overall stability of the structure, the time taken to crush 20 kg of farmin will be less than 20 minutes.
