Abstract

This study explores the implementation of an Automated Urban Farming System (AUFS) equipped with Internet of Things (IoT) technology to optimize crop growth through precise control over environmental factors such as light spectrum and photoperiod. Urban farming is increasingly recognized as a sustainable approach to addressing food demands in densely populated areas. The project focuses on understanding how different light spectrums (red, blue, and full spectrum) and photoperiods affect crop growth and nutritional content, utilizing a small-scale AUFS prototype for experimental verification. The research uses a three-tier rack system with each level assigned a specific spectrum of grow lights, controlled by an Arduino Uno R4 WiFi board. Sensors monitor vital parameters including light intensity, pH, temperature, and humidity, facilitating real-time adjustments and optimal growing conditions. The findings are expected to provide actionable insights for urban farmers to enhance crop yield and quality efficiently. The significance of this research lies in its potential to improve urban agricultural productivity and sustainability, reducing the ecological footprint of food production while making nutritious food more accessible in urban settings. Future work could extend these findings across more diverse light spectra and a broader range of crops to enhance the applicability and effectiveness of AUFS in urban farming.
