Abstract

This is a project proposed and offered by Greenamics Sdn Bhd with the aim of finding a solution to the space and labour constraints that Everyday Brush Sdn Bhd was having in their production line. The proposed solution was to implement a guided-rail material transfer system with independently driven carriage. Prior to the start of this project, literature review has been carried out on similar products in the market including searching for patents of similar systems. The various designs encountered during the search have been compared and a hybrid design was obtained. Based on the hybrid design, 3 major sections have been fabricated, namely the Cart/Carriage which holds and transports the Work-In-Progress from one station to another; the Lifter which performs the loading of the Work-In-Progress onto the Cart/Carriage; the Turner which performs the track switching to allow the Cart/Carriage to transverse the track required to reach its intended destination. The 3 major components fabricated have been tested and modified based on the test findings in order to perform as designed. Some of the tests done include minimum acceleration time and maximum speed for the Lifter; maximum speed, acceleration and deceleration time for the Cart/Carriage; maximum unloading speed for the Cart; alignment of the track to the Turner, ability of the Turner to resist the torque and bending force exerted on it when the Cart/Carriage transverses onto it to switch tracks, acceleration, deceleration and maximum speed of the Turner with the Cart/Carriage onboard. Software wise, basic programs were written to test the wiring and also the components themselves for malfunctions, before the full programs that allow the system to be automated were uploaded into the onboard PLC’s and the performance parameters such as acceleration times, deceleration times and maximum speeds were fine tuned to give optimum system performance.
