Abstract

Different type of cutting condition could give the good and bad effects to the performance of the cutting, environment and the quality of product. It is important to study which one is the optimum cutting condition for particular material so that all the bad effects or problems could be solved. The material that will be studied in this research is Mild Steel which the grade is S20CCr. Since mild steel is very commonly used in the automobile industry, therefore, a research on how to get the optimum cutting condition for it is very important so that we can boost the performance and reduce whatever that is unnecessary. Turning machine will be used for this experiment. Therefore, all the information regarding to its specification, function, limitation will be studied. The common cutting tools are going to be studied as well in this research. In this research, type C with or without carbide are going to be used. The material will be observed by using microscope to see the microstructure of the material after being cut. This way it could be compared and the best cutting condition for mild steel can be obtained. By judging from the tool life and surface roughness obtained from both dry and wet cutting results, the optimum cutting condition will be obtained.
