Abstract

The reduction in time and facilities involved in the partial elimination of welding distortion is concerned by the manufactures. Welding distortion is influenced by the manipulated welding parameters. Therefore, this project is carried out to study the weld distortion with the application of MIG Welding. The purpose of this proposal is to investigate the optimisation of distortion from different influencing welding parameters in MIG Welding. The research background for welding has been mentioned in Chapter 1 Introduction. The main objective of this project is to determine the best set of parameters which produces the least distortion by using Factorial Design Method. Among the 6 types of joints, only butt joint is used in the experiment. Also, out of several types of distortion, transverse and angular shrinkages are to be investigated. The experiment is conducted with reference to DOE which is the Factorial Design Method. Different parameters will be set and the responses will be observed. Finally the results will be analysed and the best method that produces the least distortion will be justified. The significance of this research is to minimise distortion to produce a better quality of workpiece.
