Abstract
The plasma arc cutting technique is one of the types of thermal cutting that widely used in variety industry. The S275 mild steel with 8mm had selected as the cutting material for the experimental study. The mild steel plates had cut by three different experimental factors in the experiment whereby the torch standoff height, cutting speed, and current while the cut quality will be examined by the experimental responses which are the angle and surface roughness. Meanwhile the hardness of the plate before and after cut been analyzed as well. These hardness values had compared and were expected will have very least in increment to prove that the plasma cutting technique is suitable for cutting the mild steel. The Design expert 6.0 (DOE) was used to form the experimental run with the set parameter by using the 2-level full factorial method. There were 8 experimental runs generated for the experiment had conducted including the ninth run with the optimum setting. The analysis of variance (ANOVA) on the result had analyzed in the study to determine the level of effect of the particular factor to the responses. With the high torch height and high cutting speed will result the greater kerf angle. The low cutting speed, high torch height and high current results in the smoother surface roughness.
