Abstract

A modification and improvement of a design will be done in this dissertation on the structure of the outer part of a gas stove. The improvement is to test whether the heat loss from the stove can be conserved and fully captured by the container in order to reduce fuel consumption. Nowadays, when the cooking time is too long, people will only think of increasing the gas to get a larger flame. They often neglect that when the flame gets larger, the gas consumption will be higher and the heat loss to the surrounding will also increase. In order to resolve this problem, an improved gas stove surrounded by a refractory material will be design and analyze by using software such as Solidworks and ANSYS CFD, also some manual calculations. The design of a further improved gas stove is significant in order to utilize the amount of gas supply for cooking in most efficient way with the least amount of losses to the surrounding. Few design criteria like material selection and shapes of the refractory material is crucial to build an outstanding conceptual design. To begin with my project, the very first step to start with is brainstorming in the idea of modification and improvement made based on the existing stoves in Malaysia. At the same time, also study on the patent of various stoves’ working principle and also collect information from journals, dissertation and so on. Design drawing of the improved stove will be presented in the upcoming chapter by using appropriate software. Along with the drawing, proper calculation on the heat consumption, heat transfer, gas supply, and energy losses are required to prove that the design is workable. In this saturated market, the new improved gas stove has a great potential investment in the future, yet it may face challenges as many new technology stove was invented such as induction heater. Although many new improved stoves appeared in the market, but the improved gas stove seems not too bad if compared with them. The inductor cooker may save the cost of gas consumption, yet it still required a certain amount of electricity to cook and the range of changing the heat is small as many induction heaters only have low, medium, and high option while gas stoves can have a more desirable heat range. While for the improved gas stove, the only added material is the refractory material which is low in cost and it can help the pot to capture more heat and reduce the heat loss to the surrounding. In general, by using small amount of gas to cook things faster compared with the normal gas stove.
