Abstract

This project was initially conceived to be a solar-powered water pump with the aim of transporting water from its source to a storage tank. After discussions with the project supervisor, it was proposed that the idea be changed to that of a completely mechanical system to achieve power independence. The source of energy was also changed from the initial heat power to wind power. The first thing that was done after receiving the green light for the project was to set the aims, objectives and targets for this project. After that, time was spent on doing a lot of research on many topics related to the pump, such as types of pumps, types of valves, wind turbine technology and also fluid mechanics theories. This was necessary so that there is a basic idea and concept for how to make the pump. After that, time was spent designing and refining the pump structure and design. In that same period of time, work also started on scouring around Kuala Lumpur to find the materials needed for the project e.g. aluminium blocks, rubber gaskets, Perspex and bolts and fasteners. After the green light was given to the pump design, the materials we required were purchased. Fabrication work was done at the CNC lab of the College (located at N 102) with the shaping of the pump body and cover. Some training was done first using MTS TopCAM. Fabrication work on the pump body, cover and water casing were completed on 15 October 2011.
